I love to play games. Whether they are board games, video games, or card games. Over the past few years, I have played and collected several games. I remember, growing up, being amazed or excited by games like Monopoly or Phase 10. I never suspected that other games like Settlers of Catan, Star Trek: Fleet Captains, or Legendary existed. I grew up on comic books, old school video games, and typical nerdy stuff. It was not because my parents or family introduced me to it. (Not that they sheltered me from it either because they did not.) I got my real introduction to gaming when I met a close friend of mine when I was sixteen.
That was my introduction to Dungeon and Dragons 2nd Edition. I remember buying my Player’s Handbook (PHB) and reading it all the way through twice inside of a week. From there I discovered science fiction and fantasy and other forms of gaming in the role playing world. Over the years, I found new things and I met other “nerds” along the way but I still retained my love of the little computer generated graphics images that ran around on a screen. I grew up playing KC Munchkin, Pick Axe Pete, or this weird ass race car game on the old Oddysee game system we had. I went from that to Nintendo and there I was introduced to Mario Brothers. The first one. The original with Duck Hunt and the zapper. I used to piss my sister off with how good I was at Mario. I would be the one who would gain so many lives that if I died it would be just like having one life. I could then run through the game, all levels and no level skipping, without dying. I could roll that game over and over without dying. As I have gotten older, I progressed to other games like the Nintendo 64 and Golden Eye 007 and Legend of Zelda The Ocinara of Time. I have always loved my video games. They were a form of solace or an outlet for frustration and anger. Now a days, I have a Wii and an Xbox 360 that I play when I have time. Some of my favorite games are on these systems but also started elsewhere. Final Fantasy, Mario Bros, Batman, but mostly Metal Gear. That game/series is my favorite among all my favorites. It Is a bit on the militant side and it is about military espionage. Yes you can and do kill people in the game but it is mostly a puzzle solving and rescue game. The series has gone backwards in time since the release of the newer generation consoles. I have played almost all of them and will play them all before it’s over. It’s one of the most irritating and frustrating games I have ever played. This game requires you to sneak about at some facility or on a ship on in the jungle or where ever and to be really careful to avoid sentries and what not. You have to find schematics or people to tell you what you need to know to stop one major thing. That thing is a bipedal nuke carrying mech called Metal Gear. THEN, you have to destroy Metal Gear. It’s a great game/series. You have to put serious thought in to figuring out the puzzles. And if you want to go in to the end game fully loaded, you have to carefully explore all areas. In some games, taking down Metal Gear is far easier than taking down some of the bosses in the game. I would have to say that, by far, the hardest game of the series was Metal Gear on the Nintendo. That, thus far, of all the ones I have played is the only one I have never beaten. I have an old school Nintendo emulator and the rom for it and play It through and beat it. I made it all the way to Metal Gear and never could beat it. I know most of you aren’t gamers but I am curious as to whether not any of you that are have a game that is like that for you. It’s addicting to the point that you get so sucked in that you lose track of all time and reality playing it. |
