So tonight's topic is with regards to the Kepler NASA Mission. I was doing some reading about Kepler and the original findings. I also read about some of the more current Kepler articles about the newest discoveries. The big thing is that NASA has found habitable planets. I have no desire to get in to the morality issue of whether or not we have the right or deserve to be out in space taking over planets, I would like to take time and talk about the possibility of colonizing space, so to speak.
Think about the world of possibilities this opens up for humanity. Now there was has been talk of colonizing the moon or Mars because they have been the closest things to habitable that NASA has been able to find in my life time. There were even discussions of actual plans to create atmospheric domes for people to live on on the surface of Mars. This is due to the theories that NASA scientists had that Mars was once able to sustain Earth-type life. The theories say that if excavation was done far enough down that H2O water could be found. The idea being that earthlings, human beings as it were, are seventy percent water and that means that in order to survive.
The idea is amazing to me. I am not sure I agree with all of the theory or that the idea should be abandoned. I am in awe of the idea of going to another planet to live. I know this is not a likelihood in my lifetime but the idea still overwhelms me. It puts me in the mindset of a television show that I loved while it was on the air. The show is known as Eureka and I am sure most of you have seen or heard of it. The last season was about going to Titan, which I believe is one of the moons orbiting Saturn. It is large than Earth's own moon and mostly made up of water and ice. I found it interesting that they changed those details in the show. After all, they were basing their fiction on reality. Sadly, most people did not know this.
The idea of moving in to space is such an awesome one that has possessed humans for years. Look at the television shows that exist today. All the Star Trek shows and movies, Star Wars, Battlestar Galactica, Firefly, and even more recent shows such as Extant. I think that we, as a race are just now starting to realize the possibilities that are out there. It is amazing to see the imagination that we have as a race. It makes me wonder if it is, any of it, at all likely to be real or if it is all purely fiction.
It makes me realize how child like we are as a race. I think we are completely unprepared for what is really out there. I do not know that we will ever be prepared for what is out there. We are naive as a race and have no notion of what is really out there. I think the idea of space exploration is great and all but knowing who we are as a race; it also scares the hell out of me because we know only one way of dealing with the unknown and that is fear which is never a good thing with beings of our emotional immaturity.
I do hope that one day we will make it to space and I would love to see it in my life time. I think that we have some growing up to do but maybe this Kepler thing is the beginning of learning about all of that. There is much to consider and I hope that the ventures continue in to space because I truly believe that our next frontier of knowledge is in the blackness of space.
