Ok, so, this will be the third time I have typed this up. Apparently Weebly blows alot of goats. I have tried to post this three times and it keeps coming up blank. ANYWAY, I am liking where this story is heading and I think I am going to try to make it my first publication when it's done. It is turning out to be a good short story. I am looking at a website for publishing but if anyone has any suggestions, I'll gladly take a look. I am limited by budget so I don't know what I can and cannot do.
In the mean time:
If one has never been under floating bodies when they fall, it can be quite disconcerting. After an extreme emotional situation, the reactions are no less spectacular. When the bodies landed, the fortunately enough, landed on no one and simply just added to an already tense situation. Genifer screamed and jumped toward Miles who was busy trying to contain the laughter within him so that he did not upset her further. She beat at his chest furiously as he held on to her, thankfully not twitching with convulsive laughter.
Once things had settled back down, he let her push herself away and he took a step back himself. He surveyed their surroundings and decided that if anyone else had been with that crew then they would have already come after them. Odds were that they had seen what had just happened and decided it wasn’t worth the effort for such a small reward. When things appeared to be as calm as they were going to get until the storm past, Miles began to explain about certain things he knew about.
“Screechers,” He said, “As they had become known, were afforded a large amount of respect. These snake like people, if they could be called that, tended to feed on the flesh of humans and would discard the bones. They had come about after The Breaking, along with many other creatures and strange things. Screechers looked mostly human but had body movement like snakes and instead of human hands they tended to have sharp clawed fingers. Their skin was very tough and sometimes often looked scaly like that of a snake. No one was ever quite sure how they had come about but it was guessed that the radiation fallout from The Breaking caused it.”
“The Breaking was called that because of what had happened during its time. What little history was known about The Breaking said it lasted about seven days. The orbit of the planet around the sun had taken it through a moving meteor storm, so scientists of the time called it. This was a meteor storm that, as far as they could tell with their equipment, just appeared out of nowhere. The meteors started the whole affair. Some of what I read says that most of them did something called bouncing off our atmosphere but did enough damage that we occasionally see odd colored lights in the sky during the day and the night. Nothing in the books about what that’s all about. Some of the meteors actually came crashing down to the ground. Those that hit here in what was once called the United States did a large amount of damage.” He was recounting what he knew from some of the more recent books he had read. It had been a long time since he had done any kind of real reading about this. This information was bordering on two hundred years old, maybe more.
He continued when he could tell she was genuinely interested. “Ones that impacted the ground caused what the books say were massive earthquakes. These quakes ripped our continent apart in some spots. I’ve seen rough maps of our land and of what this land used to look like and if those newer maps are accurate, we are in a changed world. In some spots, electricity still works sporadically and in others it doesn’t work at all. There are still some areas, mostly controlled by The Black mind you, that work just like before. There’s not much more to tell really. The Black replaced what used to be called the American Government. From what I’ve read, we’d have liked it better back in the days of that time. The Black is mostly what’s called military minded.” He knew, also, how they worked because he used to be in their military. It was where he’d been trained. He left after his second tour with them. They had told him it was voluntary and he could leave after his agreement had been served out. He learned otherwise, when he left.
Fortunately, he suspected this would happen because he’d already seen the signs of it. So he quietly hid his own stashes of supplies and currency where they could not trace it. He left just enough for them to see. This was what he wanted them to seize. He knew it would happen. He knew things about The Black. Things he wished he did not. Things that he knew, to a certain degree, guaranteed his safety unless he tried to punch the school yard bully in the face. He wasn’t sure where helping this woman lay in all that. What he did know was that she needed his help and he could not stand idly by and let them kill her or her family, regardless of her potential abilities.
