Miles just stood there in shock. There were few who could best him in a fight and he knew that taking on three Screechers was going to be tough. She had just taken out the hard hitters, literally, with a thought. “How the HELL did you DO that?”
Genifer was now standing, with her arms dangling, staring at the floating corpses. She showed no sign fear, anger, upset, or any kind of emotion. She just stood there while the two dead bodies floated a good fifteen feet in the air. Miles took a cautious step in her direction and moved sideways to get a better look at her face. It was completely blank; almost as if she were in a trance. He slid closer and waved a hand in front of her face. Nothing. Finally, he raised his hand in front of him and snapped his fingers. She jerked wildly and he reacted by jumping back out of her reach. It never occurred to him that she had literally just thought two Screechers to death so jumping back was pretty useless. “Why are you snapping at….” She cut off and screamed at the top of her lungs. Miles was thankful for the torrential down power because it drowned out her scream. If there were any more lurking about, that would certainly have brought them out of the wood work. “What the hell did you do to those things? How are they hanging in the air like that?” She bit out at him in fear. She began to back away from him and towards the door by which they had entered the warehouse. Her face was all terror and agony. He tried to take a step towards her and she yelled at him to stop. He put up his hands in a soothing gesture and backed up a couple of paces. “Calm down. I am not going to hurt you. I did not do that to those things. You did.” As the words left his mouth he knew them to be a mistake. She panicked and bolted straight for the door. “STOP! You can’t go out there, you could die!” He yelled in her direction but she was already halfway to the door. He didn’t want to die himself but he didn’t know what else to do so he flipped his stun baton off and hurled it at the back of her legs. His aim was true. Her legs buckled as they became entangled in the baton and he ran to her as fast as he could. Even so, by the time he arrived she was almost halfway up off the ground. “Please, don’t make me do this,” He muttered under his breath. As she rose though, he knew he had little choice. With casual ease, he swept her legs out from under her again and he caught her. Wrapping his arms around her arms and pinning them to her sides. In the same movement, he pinned her to his chest. All the while praying that she didn’t turn it on and kill him. She continued to struggle and he held her as tightly as he could. Once the ferocity of her struggle against him faded, he felt her sobbing. He wasn’t sure he should let her go but he didn’t want her thinking he was trying to kill her. He set her down, gently, and turned her to face him. “I didn’t do this. I was busy with the third one and when I turned around, you were dealing with these two.” He had turned her so that his back was to the door. This way she had to run past him to get back at the door that he knew about. It was a warehouse so he knew that there would be other exits. She began to slowly back up from him. “I am the one that YOU asked for help, remember?” As she continued to back up he followed her slowly but surely because he did not want her getting out of his reach. When she finally settled in and stopped moving she stared at him. “You are telling me that I somehow killed these two things and made the float? That makes no sense. Why would I do that?” “Honey, I have no idea but I can tell you what I saw. I turned around and you had your hands out, pointing at each one individually. They were floating and the next thing I heard was the snapping of necks. Then you just stopped.” He was watching her closely. Unsure of whether or not the whole thing was a sham. He was fairly certain it was not. If she could move without being seen and also kill with a thought, then why would she need his help against The Black to save her family? Something was not adding up and now he wanted to know what it was. “I…ever since…” She finally sighed and sat down on the ground. Neither of them noticed where they were now stationed. “Ever since I was about six years old, I have had odd blackouts. Whenever I came to from thing… Well, odd things had happened once. One time, a man threatened my mother. The next thing I know she was covered in blood and I don’t remember how it happened. Another time, a horse was running at me and suddenly, it was floating over me. All kinds of weird things like that, throughout my entire life.” She sat there, staring up at Miles with an odd mixture of fear, confusion, and relief on her face. It was at that moment that the Screecher bodies fell. |
